BRAZIL'S SOYBEAN PRODUCTION AND IMPACT AgEcon
Flaskerud, George K..
Soybean production in Brazil has grown rapidly in recent years. The objective of this publication is to evaluate the potential impact of Brazilian soybean production on North Dakota and other producers. Brazil, followed by Argentina, is the leading producer in South America. All South American soybean production surpassed the United States during 2002-03. In Brazil, production and yields have grown the fastest in Mato Grosso (Center-West) and other expansion states that have Cerrado land. Soybean costs of production for 2003 harvest are considerably lower in Mato Grosso than in North Dakota and Iowa even when freight costs to Rotterdam are considered, giving them a strong competitive position in the world market. Consequently, Mato Grosso soybean...

COMPETITIVIDADE DA PECUÁRIA DE CORTE DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO VS MATO GROSSO DO SUL E MATO GROSSO AgEcon

COSTS, YIELDS, AND NET RETURNS, COMMERCIAL NO-TILL COTTON PRODUCTION, MISSISSIPPI, 1999 AgEcon
Parvin, David W., Jr.; Cooke, Fred T., Jr..
An analysis of a 1999 sample of ten no-till producers indicates that over a reasonable range of cotton lint prices, no-till cotton production may result in larger net returns per acre than conventional tillage. However, the authors caution that additional analysis based on a larger sample of commercial no-till growers on better cotton soils is needed.

COSTS, YIELDS, AND NET RETURNS, COMMERCIAL ULTRA-NARROW ROW COTTON PRODUCTION, MISSISSIPPI, 1999 AgEcon
Parvin, David W., Jr.; Cooke, Fred T., Jr.; Molin, W.T..
An analysis of a 1999 sample of 13 no-till producers indicates that over a reasonable range of cotton lint prices, ultra narrow cotton production may result in larger net returns per acre than conventional production practices. The largest percentage cost reduction is in fixed expenses. In general, total direct expenses per acre are also reduced, although UNRC usually results in higher seed and chemical expenses. UNRC has a lower total cost per pound compared to conventional cotton.

Does the U.S. Midwest Have a Cost Advantage Over China in Producing Corn, Soybeans, and Hogs? AgEcon
Fang, Cheng; Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
China's accession to the World Trade Organization, a significant event for U.S. agricultural trade, has been viewed as benefitting U.S. farmers, especially midwestern farmers. This research compares the productivity and cost of production (COP) of China and the United States in producing corn, soybeans, and hogs. The results show that the U.S. Midwest (defined in this study as the Heartland region as classified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service) has a substantial advantage in land and labor productivities in producing corn and soybeans, especially compared to China's South and West producing regions. However, China's Northeast region, a major corn- and soybean-producing area, has a very competitive COP over the U.S. Midwest....

Economic and soil quality indicators in soybean crops grown under integrated crop-livestock and winter-grain cultivation systems Ciência Rural
Simioni,Flávio José; Bartz,Marie Luise Carolina; Wildner,Leandro do Prado; Spagnollo,Evandro; Veiga,Milton da; Baretta,Dilmar.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between economic indicators of soybean crops ( Glycine max L.) cultivated with Crop-Livestock Integration (CLI) or with grain production in winter, and the chemical, physical and biological attributes of the soil. It was selected ten agricultural sites in Santa Catarina to measure economic results and edaphic attributes, data was submitted to a Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Results indicated that soybean production in the summer and grain production in the winter yielded better economic results compared with summer soybean and CLI in winter. This reflects the higher productivity of the crops (9.1%) and the improved chemical, physical, and biological attributes of the soil (with the exception of...

Examining the Costs of Producing Processing Snap Beans and Green Peas in New York State AgEcon
Ho, Shuay-Tsyr; Rickard, Bradley J.; Kikkert, Julie; Klotzbach, Kathryn; Reiners, Stephen; Smith, Marc.
It has been a long time since we have seen a cost of production study for horticultural crops, notably processing vegetable crops, in New York State; however, research in this arena is completed in many other states and continues to offer useful information to industry stakeholders. This type of information is especially important in the processing vegetable sector in New York State as it has seen substantial acreage decreases in recent years. Here we develop a survey to collect data from processing vegetable growers in New York State and use it to calculate costs and net returns of producing snap beans and green peas. Our results indicate that the average cost of producing snap beans in New York State is $568 per acre and is $563 per acre for green peas;...

Impact of the Ethanol Boom on Livestock and Dairy Industries: What Are They Going to Eat? AgEcon
Anderson, David P.; Anderson, John D.; Sawyer, Jason.
Increased demand for corn for ethanol production has helped push grain prices to record levels. This has increased livestock production costs, and producers have responded with changes to production systems. This paper explores the degree to which costs can be mitigated with alternative feeds, the effect this might have on physical performance, and the impact of alternative feeds on the competitive position of different species.
